1. Blueberries

You might already be aware of blueberries’ high antioxidant content, but surprisingly many people are not. Easy to find at most any grocery store or market, blueberries are one of the easiest and most effective ways to increase your antioxidant intake naturally without pills. The ORAC rating of one cup blueberries is very high at 9019.[1] If you can afford to, eating one cup a day is an excellent way to supplement your diet.

2. Blackberries

Although generally more difficult to find than blueberries, blackberries are another well known berry which contains a very high concentration of antioxidants. The ORAC value has officially been listed at 7701 per cup.[1] Most often you will find blackberries in a berry mix along with raspberries and blueberries.

3. Cherries

Everyone’s heard of cherries, those unmistakable sweet, shiny red berries. However not everyone realizes what a great source of antioxidants they are. Next time you dive into a cherry pie, you’ll be happy to know it’s helping to ward off free radicals. One cup of cherries has been determined to have an ORAC rating of 4873 which puts them a few steps below blueberries, but they’re so tasty you’ll probably end up eating twice as many anyway![1]

Acai Berries - What Are They and Are They Really Healthy?

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

If you haven’t heard of the Acai Berries, you are way out of today’s loop! These remarkable, power-packed, little berries from the Acai Palm tree are native to the swamps and flood areas of Central and Southern America. The berries are deep, dark purple and grow in clusters similar to those of grapes. They resemble grapes but are smaller and darker. They have a very large seed, very little pulp and were usually made into a wine. The acai berries have been around for centuries but were only introduced to the western world in the 1990′s.

The natives of the Amazon have eaten these berries for centuries and have realized the excellent health benefits that come from them. The tribes people used the acai berries to provide energy, build the immune system, fight infection, protect the heart and control prostate enlargement. This information was given from generation to generation by their tribal medicine people.

At some point, the Brazilian beach goers discovered the energy benefits of the Acai Berries and added the acai to smoothies. They say the acai tastes like effervescent berries with a hint of chocolate. The smoothies became very popular with the trendy, beach crowd. Researchers soon discovered the magic little berry and found that, in addition to providing an energy boost, the acai is rich in proteins fibre; minerals, such as potassium, iron, phosphorus and calcium; Omega 6, also known as linoleic acid Omega 9, also called as oleic acid and the following vitamins: B1, B2, B3, C and E. The Acai Berries also have up to thirty-three times as much Anthocyanin as red wine grapes.

Is Milk Good For You?

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Is milk good for you? Our government says yes, but most scientists who do not work for the dairy industry say no. Why the discrepancy? Let’s look at the research.

Though most people still think that milk is good for their bones, there is no evidence for this. The famous Harvard Nurses Study followed more than 77,000 women for over twelve years. Among other things, researchers wanted to see if milk would help prevent or slow the progression of osteoporosis (a disease that makes bones more brittle). Not only was there no evidence of any benefit, researcher Doctor Robert M. Kradjian of Seton Medical Center in California points out that “Fracture rates were higher for those who consumed three or more servings, compared to those who did not drink milk.”

Some scientists now believe that the particular types of proteins in milk may lead to bone damage. In addition, most agree that the calcium found in dairy products isn’t very absorbable for humans. Calcium found in plants is much easier to absorb. These sources include leafy green vegetables, as well as sesame butter (used in humus), some other seeds, whole grains and nuts.

Fitness & Your Meal Schedule

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

The food we eat has a major effect on our fitness and our appearance. No one disputes that. But not only is the type and amount of food you eat is key, when you eat and how often you eat is crucial too. If you want to know one of the real secrets of improving your health and fitness, you should keep reading.

What time you eat has a huge impact on your results. Let’s start at the beginning of the day. When you first wake up, your body is running on empty, because you haven’t eaten since the day before. Your blood sugar level is low, and your body is running on reserves. Once those reserves are used up, your body will turn to its next available source of fuel, your muscles! It’s very difficult to get in shape when you’re groggy, hungry, and your body is cannibalizing the muscles for energy. You need to eat your first meal as soon as you can after waking up in the morning. This gets your body fueled up and preserves your muscles.

Now you understand how important it is to have a healthy meal soon after you wake up. This gets your blood sugar to the correct level (assuming you are eating healthy stuff) so you can function effectively and preserves your muscles. You’ll feel better, function better, be able to work out harder, and protect your muscles while shedding fat.

The quest to keep your blood sugar level stable also determines how often you should eat. Within 3 to 4 hours after a meal, your body will have digested that food and your blood sugar level will start declining. That means you really shouldn’t go much more than 3 hours between meals (except when you are sleeping at night).

Benefits Of Vegetarianism

As time moves on there is an increasing belief amongst people that becoming a vegetarian may make a difference. It is surprising how many people are willing to do this but cannot grasp just how important even one person who changes is in the overall picture. While it might be true that one extra person won′t make a huge statistical difference in a world of meat-eaters, you can do a lot as an individual that will be good for you and good for hundreds of animals. One argument for making this change are the benefits it has on your health and the problems that an excess of meat causes, like heart disease; this is the most common reason for death in America and other big meat eating nations.

Many of today’s heart conditions would not be so commonplace if people did not eat so much food with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy products and eggs. The organization Earth Save has calculated that a vegetarian has only a quarter of the chance of a heart attack as someone who has meat in their diet. Pure vegans have an even lower likelihood of a heart attack with only a 10 percent chance against a meat eater. The improvements in health do not end there if you are a vegetarian.

Meat contains a number of preservatives which have links with cancer, something which is dramatically reduced when you do not eat meat. Animal feed also contains hormones to make them put weight on faster so vegetarians are not usually exposed to these chemicals which most people consume everyday. The consumption of lactose will also be reduced which is claimed to cause some digestive problems. On a more ethical note, you will be surprised how much less suffering in animals you will be responsible for by becoming a vegetarian.

Acai Berry Diet Has It All, Great Nutrients and Excellent Taste

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

What Oprah says goes, and when it comes to the Acai Berry Diet that she recently presented on her hit show, the berry is now gone. Not to be alarmed, I mean gone in a positive way. It has gone out to just about every individual in America who saw the show or heard about the show. You do a simple search on line and the only thing you see is what Oprah had to say.I want to make sure that the facts she laid out there are understandable.

First of all, the Acai Berry which had relatively little publicity here in the states, has actually been used for a long time. It is grown in the Amazon basin so it is only realistic that we were not the only ones to have found this marvelous berry. Indigenous people to the area have relied on its nutrients to keep them healthy and in shape, although I am not sure they knew that is what it was doing for them. Did these people care about the aging look or the spare tire around the middle? Probably because they did not have this problem thanks to the Acai Berry.

Oprah pointed out some excellent points about the Acai Berry Diet. It is what is known as a superfood. Not only is it filled with an assortment of antioxidants that the body definitely needs and hardly gets enough of but when you have this type of positive for the inside of the body, of course it is going to do wonders to the outside. The skin soaks up the nutrients too. This probably goes without saying, but perhaps with this superfood, the effects of good eating are reflected on the outside at a relatively fast rate.

There are things that were not mentioned on the Oprah show that probably should not be overlooked. Maybe that is all that happened on the show is that there were simple things that were not mentioned, probably in the essence of time. But there are other superfoods available that can offer the type of punch as the Acai berry. There are superfoods that are full of antioxidants, can help speed up your metabolism and help you feel and look better. The tough part here is having them taste as good or be as available as the new Acai Berry Diet seems to be now.

Do you know the meaning of dieting?

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

The most deceptive word in the weight loss market is dieting. Everybody interested in losing weight will obviously speak about dieting. So what actually a diet is? A diet is the food taken by a person. It is very certain that you have to consume vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fat that is crucial for your body. A balanced diet consists of all these essentials in required quantities.

When a person says he is dieting, it means that he actually takes care about what he eats and how much he eats. Nowadays, the way dieting is used is different . Counting on calories and plainly skipping fat foods is not just dieting. A diet must give you all the essential nutrition required for the body. Using fad diets to lose weight quickly is not the healthy way. Calorie shifting diet that contains all types of foods providing essential nutrition to the body is good to lose fat healthily .

Missing breakfast and meals and calling it as dieting is not good. Also, some people reduce their food consumption so much and feel hungry most of the times attributing it to dieting. All of these habits are not healthy . When you eat a diet, you must make sure that you consume good foods with essential nutrients. An idiot proof diet must contain everything that is good for your body. By including fibre and reducing direct carbohydrates, you can reduce the number of calories you consume in a healthy way.

Another common problem with dieting people is that they don’t have the capability to understand the truth behind dieting. They simply ignore some foods and eat more of others in an attempt to reduce calorie intake. This is very bad, because only an expert can give you advice on how much calories you need. The Fat loss for idiots program generates a customized diet plan that can be consumed to lose fat in a healthy way.

Colon Cleansing and The Acai Berry

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

The necessity in today’s world for going on a Colon Cleanse diet cannot be overemphasized! Most of us are so toxic we do not realize it, and we are amazed when we go to have colonic therapy, and in shock when we see what comes out of our bodies. Several years ago I went with a friend to the Ann Wigmore foundation, in order for her to try to overcome her cancer. One of the requirements of the program was that she attended colonic therapy at least once a week. When we would get her on the table, massive amounts of waste would come out of her bowels. The colonic therapist turned and said to me, “No wonder she is ill”, as my friend’s bowels were so impacted with old fecal matter!

Unfortunately, my friend lost her battle with cancer, leaving behind three small children. John Wayne, the popular American actor, died of cancer directly related to a dirty colon. After his death, over 40 lbs of fecal matter was removed from his colon. Even Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, also had a bowel that contained over 40 pounds worth of old fecal matter trapped there.  Do you think he could have used a good colon cleansing?

The fact of the matter is, that more diseases and unhealthy conditions can be attributed to a compacted colon, than almost any other malady we suffer in the modern world! It is imperative therefore that all of us clean out our bowels. Recent studies have indicated very strongly that the Acai Berry is one of the most effective and powerful foods that we can have within our bodies to cleanse our bowels and keep our colons clean and healthy. Apparently the Acai Berry is so high in anti oxidants as well as fiber, that it has the perfect combination for keeping our personal plumbing clean. In addition to this, the Acai Berry is also loaded with minerals, B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, and protein.

Benefits of Tribulus Supplementation

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Have you ever been at the gym and noticed that you are not making the same gains as other people there? You ask yourself why, do they work out more than you or are you just one of those hard gainers? One answer for that may be due to testosterone

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone found in the body and is responsible for many important functions in the body. It can increase muscle mass and improve bone density and strength. Testosterone is naturally produced in the body and people can have differing levels. The differences in these levels help explain why some people can gain muscle faster than others.

This has been known for a long time by doctors and people in the body building and sporting community, this is the reason why some athletes take anabolic steroids. These are synthetics forms of testosterone and when taken orally or via injection your muscle mass and strenght will start to improve. Steroid use can have harmful side effects such as enlargement of the heart and liver cancer. While it is dangerous it’s also illegal for most sports and if you get caught using steroids in some sports you can get banned for life.

Steroid use increases testosterone levels artificially but another way is to make the body produce more naturally. There have been natural ways found that can make the body produce more testosterone and Tribulus Terrestris is one of them. Commonly known as the puncture vine it has been taken for years as a natural remedy to help promote virility and sexual performance.
